Number Transfer Issues

Like 49210 other people in this forum I have the issue that the porting form asked for the IMEI, which I entered, only to get a tex message that the ESN/MEID number is wrong. I didn't enter the MEID because no one asked for it. 
How can I supply the account number of the old provider or the MEID please?
