@bobcatbob - try restarting your phone, or perform a reset of the network settings on your device.
If you have a voicemail contact in your phone, try deleting it and adding one of these (local to you perhaps, but doesn't matter if you have canada wide calling) listed in this post, then call the number, can you retrieve messages?
