3G or 4G

I’m a snowbird heading to the USA. All I need is calling in the USA. I have the cheapest 3G calling/text/ data plan currently with PM. If I add USA minutes in Add-ons, do I still need to upgrade to a 4G plan for calling to work properly?  I want to keep my CDN number otherwise I would consider a usa SIM card.

If you are staying for an extended length of time in the USA…more than 90 days.

I would suggest you get a local SIM from Mint Mobile or Tello Mobile.

To keep you old number, your account needs to be active by making monthly payment. You can switch to the $15 plan while you are away.

To clarify for your phone number to work in the US you would need to purchase the 10 day US Roaming talk add on for $8×3-10 day add ons. They have to be purchased consecutively with a 24 hour waiting period in between so not a practical solution for the long term.

However call forwarding your pm number to a voip app phone number (like textnow) will allow incoming calling to come thru your voip app on your phone while using a mobile data on a cheap US provider plan that has a US phone # for Americans to call that won't be long distance for them.

Mint Mobile has cheap 3 month, 6 month and 1 year plans starting at $15/4gb and unlimited calling/texting for the US and to Canada and Mexico. They also have referral credits and good promotions. Or look at tello mobile for plans starting at $5+/month.

Note: The $15/1000 US minutes add on is only for calls from Canada to the US.

There's no such thing as 3g or 4g add-ons. Roaming in the U.S. uses whatever network is available.  Whether a customer's Public Mobile plan is 3g or 4g makes no difference to roaming services/roaming add-ons.

@geraldhorvath Hi the only practical option for you if your going any amount of time would be to get a local SIM card when you get there

You can easily keep your Canadian number as I believe US add-ons for few months will cost you dearly.

To keep account without paying too much for it.

Remove autopay. Your account will be suspended for 90 days. Log in to your account around 88th day and pay for the next month manually. Let it get suspended again. Repeat process. So you would pay $15+tax every 3 months or so without losing your number/account.

If you forget to pay, after 90+day your account will be deleted, number lost.

Or just activate autopay and let account gets renewed every 30 days. For 6 months cost will be $90+tax. I would still suggest you to log in every 30 days to confirm bill is paid and your service is active.

@geraldhorvath , US calling add-ons can be added to any base plan.  However, you should be mindful that calling performance has taken a bit of a hit with the sunsetting of the 3G network in the US.  The remaining calling capability is via T-Mobile 2G network.  AT&T does not have 2G.  This will be the way forward until Public Mobile adopts VoLTE.
