Use a old phone as a Emergency Internet Backup

fixin1

NOTE: This feature may not be available on all phones and Wireless routers.

This is what I have as a Emergency Internet Backup and the requirements to use it:

  • 1x Wifi Router with Hotspot / USB tethering (Eero+ offers Hotspot connection via Wifi) (Would Suggest Gl-iNet because of USB tethering support)
  • 1x Smartphone (i.e. Galaxy A05 LTE, iPhone SE 2020)
  • 1x USB-C cable
  • [Optional] Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) in case of a power fault during the outage.
  • Data Plan (Would recommend 15GB+ for longer downtime)

Make sure to keep the phone always on and the failover on the router (If available) set to be ethernet priority 1 then hotspot priority 2 if priority 1 ends up not working.

And make sure to keep hotspot tethering on and you will always have internet (As long as TELUS doesn't have a Rogers 2022 outage).

@hTideGnow - Yes, but for example it is grandparents with lots of outages DSL, and then they only have landline phone, they could easily get another backup internet.

Rogers has Storm Ready Wifi, which has a UPS.

It could also put your battery at strain. This is more for rural internet and outage is further than a few days.

thanks @fixin1

but you need this backup for your home internet?  Then you don't need another phone as backup.  If your current phone has enough data, when home outage comes, you can just start hotspot for your home devices.

or for people who are serious with this, they can subscribe to a cheaper home internet, around $30 to $40  a month.  Some home router allows two modems to plug in at the same time and will flip to the backup modem (internet source) when the primary is down
