Did you mean:

Change Subscription Plans are much better than New Activation Plans.

Did you know that the current "Change Subscription" plans for existing customers are much better than the "New Activation" plans for new customers? See below for comparison of the plans.

Unfortunately, these better plans are only available if your current subscribed plan is cheaper than the available Change Subscription plans. It is always easy to upgrade to a more expensive plan but very difficult to downgrade to a cheaper plan.

Moral of the story: If you intend to sign up for Public Mobile as a new customer, I strongly recommend that you may be better off by picking the cheapest i.e. $19 plan to start and then changing to a much better higher Change Subscription which meets your needs afterwards.  YMMV.

New Activation              Change Subscription

$35 5G 60GB CUSM    $35 5G 60GB CUSM

$34 5G 60GB Unlim     $34 5G 60GB Unlim

$30 5G 10GB CUSM     $29 5G 20GB CUSM

$45 5G 80GB CUSM    $39 5G 80GB CUSM

$55 5G 100GB               $50 5G 100GB

$32 5G 20GB                 $30 4G 20GB

$25 4G 5GB                   $23 4G 6GB

$22 4G 3GB                   $20 4G 3GB  *

$19 4G 1GB                     $19 4G 1GB

The bold shows the key differences in the plans. There may also be some minor differences with respect to the included international long distance. I did not bother to include the ling distance in order to fit the comparison into an easily viewable phone screen.

* This is my current $20 plan. All of the Change Subscription plans which I have listed above are currently available to me to change. Depending on your current plan, you will have different Change Subscription plans available for you.

I used to pay as much as $29 per month. I was able to slowly downgrade to the $20 by checking my Change Subscription on a regular basis to wait for a cheaper plan to become available (infrequent but does happen). I incrementally downgraded until I found a plan which is both cheap and still met my needs. It was a frustratingly slow process. Customer agents will no longer help existing customers to downgrade like in the past.

The other option was to port out and port back in but then I would have lost all of my accrued benefits and referrals.

I hope that the above is helpful. Remember that the ever-changing available Change Subscription plans are different depending on what your current plan is. If your available Change Subscription plans are different from the ones that I have posted, please post them for everybody to compare and shop. Thank you.

I just checked my Change Subscription. The $19 4G 1GB plan which I listed in my original post is no longer available to be. This is okay because I am happy with my current $20 4G 3GB plan. But it just goes to show you that the plans, especially the cheaper ones, in our respective Change Subscription can be changed by Public Mobile at any time.

100% agreement with @funpig1

Canadians are too often hoodwinked into thinking that a cheaper $/GB is a great deal instead of the bottom line. Why pay $$$$ for something you won’t use?

Telus, Rogers and Bell offer 200+ GB plans for an outrageous monthly expense which is great if you live on your device (yes some people hotspot laptops etc)

I am 100% happy with my measly 20GB plan as I have a life beyond my iPhone

If you can use that much data each month, good on you. Always just pay for what you need.

The original post only applies if your needs decrease and you want to pay less.

I’m happy with this plan so far

Nothing cheaper than $27 showed for me but that’s fine — seldom use more than 10GB in a month but it’s nice to have a buffer especially for travelling across Canada or visiting Mexico (as the USA is verboten for the next few years)

@SKSuh

That gives some hope for people who have $30+ plans who want to downgrade.

Just out of curiosity, when you were at the $27 level, were any cheaper plans available in your change subscription?

Great summary!!

I have tweaked my plan as follows:

Feb 2025 $39/68GB 5G CA-US-MX

Apr 2025 $29/30GB LTE CA

May 2025 $27/20GB LTE CA

Jun 2025 $29/20GB 5G CA-US-MX (happy mode)

@funpig1

agreed....I have a cheap $19 right now but would gladly upgrade in December, to Canada / Mx plan...if I could downgrade to $19 plan when I get home in spring. So..now I just keep using my Telcel number (about $15 Cdn/per month) when in Mx and WhatsApp to keep in touch with fam. I UNSUBSCRIBE my PM plan while away so PM loses income for those 89 days !

I miss the old days when customers could easily upgrade and downgrade whenever they want and as their needs change. I fully understand why Public Mobile has made it difficult to downgrade.

I would just like new (and existing) customers to understand how the game is played. They should only choose the cheapest plan which meets their realistic needs and only upgrade if their needs increase. And as you can see from my first post (and from numerous other posts about promotional texts), Public Mobile will offer you much better and more expensive plans to entice you to to upgrade.  Just understand that it will be more difficult to downgrade afterwards.

There's nothing wrong having a lot of mobile data, if you have a need for it. Some people do not have home internet and just use their phone mobile data as a hotspot to provide Wi-Fi at home.  Some people stream a lot of movies off of their phone or use their phone to hotspot their laptop to work remotely.

My home has experienced downed power lines as a result of winds. When that happens, my home Wi-Fi stopped working.  So, it's nice to know that I have up to about 9GB of emergency mobile data on my phone to work and play.

I guess PM does not want customers to play ping-pong with the plans but to stay at one particular one. Less maintenance and processing.

People used to downgrade to $15 plan when they went overseas for a few months and then paid for service every 85th day keeping their number.
PM would not make money that way but number will be assigned and not really used.

Yes. It is amazing to see people posting that they are still on the $25 3G 1GB plan. That was the plan that I started with when I joined almost 6 years ago.

I always feel bad for those people who get who sign up for the more expensive big data bucket plans and then realize later that they are paying too much for data that they cannot realistically use (I was in same boat when I excitedly upgraded to a $29 Boxing Day plan). Then they come here asking for help to downgrade or complaining that they cannot.

Same thing for the US-Mexico roaming. Some people have switched from a nice cheap plan a roaming plan because they went on vacation. Then, they are surprised to find out that they cannot switch back after their vacation ends. They would have been much better off keeping their original cheap plan and buying a temporary travel esim.

@Handy1

The listed Change Subscription plans have been available for me for quite a while now.  I find it interesting that the cheaper $19 plan is still also available to me after many months.  I could downgrade even further. However, the extra 2 GB for only a dollar more is worth it to me even though I rarely go over 1 GB. I still have almost 6 GB of holiday bonus data from years ago. I have up to about 9GB available to me.

P.S. I noticed that you reactivated (for at least a month) that old $13 plan which I transferred to you. I earned a referral point for the month of May.  Thanks.  When are you going to keep that old plan in regular activation so I can earn more referral points?  LOL.

@funpig1

I'm guessing that most Public Mobile customers just pick a plan that fits their budget / lifestyle on the day they activate their new account....then rarely (if ever) log in to see what plans options are available. Most of the friends that I've referred to PM, are content with their initial plans, even when I can show them something "better or cheaper". There are still may PM customers who continue using the older plans with only province wide calling or plans with very limited calling minutes...they never look into their options like yous guys and I do.

Interesting but it all depends on a PM management.

I WISH they bring back $15 plan with NO data but unlimited calls.

I am just curious, what are going to do with 20, 60, 80, etc. GB data on a puny phone's screen and awkward-software keyboard?
