Aurora Borealis

Any folks out there planning to venture out in the wee hours tonight to catch nature's light show? I'm planning a solo adventure as no one I know is willing to venture out so late. Any takers in Vancouver? I would love see anyone's photos that do make the effort! Happy Snapping!

@popping

Maybe I shouldn't have signed up for aurora watch so I wouldn't know what I'm missing!😒

I waited until Nov 4, 1am MT and went to bed.

The following photos are from ca.nextdoor.com and were taken at the location on hill higher than where I live.

This photo was taken at Nov 4, 7:10am this morning.

This photo was taken at 2:35am MT

@popping

Yes thanks to you I got the aurora yellow then the red alert. But unfortunately the current downpour means there is nothing to see for us in the lower mainland.

Red alert was issued Nov 4 12:11am MT

Yellow alert was issued at 8:10pm MT tonight until 7am tomorrow morning.

I am not going to stay up all night for it.

If you are up early to go to work, check the north sky.

@softech

Nope...I watched the Yellowknife feed for awhile and signed up for aurora watch as per @popping 's links to be prepared for next time. It just started to rain here for the next week so it's wait and see for future possibilities.

so @darlicious   did you go out last night (or is it tonight ??)

@popping

Hey that's cool.....

@popping

Wow thanks for the update! Is there a similar site for Vancouver? But since you are much farther North than us I would presume our chance of seeing them is much lower.😃👍

aurorawatch.ca is run at UofA in Edmonton.  They monitor the geomagnetic activity in the Edmonton area.  They sent out red alert on Oct 11, 10:10pm MT (Thanksgiving evening).

After Thanksgiving dinner, my daughter received a text message from her friend in SK about seeing Northern lights.  She took a car to look for Northern lights and came back around midnight without seeing any.  Then, we wait at our backyard.  After 30 minutes, we were awarded with the light show.  The aurorawatch.ca red alert was accurate.

Current geomagnetic activity at Edmonton is lower than that on the Thanksgiving evening.

@darlicious   Maybe you'll get lucky tonight...still a nice shot from last night.

@popping

Nice shot!

@dabr

I used to see them all the time as a kid in Cold Lake, Alberta. Last time I saw them was 30 years ago in Merrit B.C. Last night was a bust. I'm glad I didn't go out but just tried a few test shots from my attic window.

Nicely done @popping . UTC = 4 hours earlier in ET or 7 hours earlier in PT (depending on whether savings time is observed in your area)

The following text is from https://services.swpc.noaa.gov/text/3-day-forecast.txt

Tonight is the best night for viewing.

:Product: 3-Day Forecast
:Issued: 2021 Oct 31 1230 UTC
# Prepared by the U.S. Dept. of Commerce, NOAA, Space Weather Prediction Center
#
A. NOAA Geomagnetic Activity Observation and Forecast

The greatest observed 3 hr Kp over the past 24 hours was 4 (below NOAA
Scale levels).
The greatest expected 3 hr Kp for Oct 31-Nov 02 2021 is 7 (NOAA Scale
G3).

NOAA Kp index breakdown Oct 31-Nov 02 2021

            Oct 31     Nov 01     Nov 02

Rationale: G1-G3 (Minor-Strong) geomagnetic storms are likely on 31 Oct,
with G1 (Minor) storms likely on 01 Nov, due to CME effects.

B. NOAA Solar Radiation Activity Observation and Forecast

Solar radiation, as observed by NOAA GOES-16 over the past 24 hours, was
above S-scale storm level thresholds.

Solar Radiation Storm Forecast for Oct 31-Nov 02 2021

              Oct 31  Nov 01  Nov 02
S1 or greater   25%      5%      5%

Rationale: No S1 (Minor) or greater solar radiation storms are expected.
No significant active region activity favorable for radiation storm
production is forecast.

C. NOAA Radio Blackout Activity and Forecast

No radio blackouts were observed over the past 24 hours.

Radio Blackout Forecast for Oct 31-Nov 02 2021

              Oct 31        Nov 01        Nov 02

People living north of the yellow line may see the northern lights.

@popping   Beautiful photo...never seen them myself, hopefully one day..

My daughter saw the Northern light from my north facing backyard on Oct 12 after midnight MT.  My backyard is quite dark at night.  There is a dim street light and is blocked by 2 tall pine trees in my backyard.  You can see the top of my pine trees in the photo.

Northern Light -2021-10-12.jpeg

It is currently sunny with clear blue sky.  I will take a look again tonight if I am not too tired to stay up after midnight.

Edit:

1. added (a.k.a Northern Lights) to the title of this post.

2. Add MT time zone.
