But let's face. There are still a lot of people that may have to call LD as they don't have Canada Wide calling. Close friends, family and businesses are not going to call LD. So it is to @AFeller best interest to find a number that is close to him. BUT the question is how close is he to a Bell/Telus tower?  See here to find.

Here is a list of the carriers that have service in the Dryden ON rate centre:

https://localcallingguide.com/lca_prefix.php?exch=153550

For wireless service, we have Tbaytel, Bell, and Rogers - no Telus unfortunately. Lots of good suggestions so far from others - ie picking a number from somewhere nearby, or even Alberta for no PST 🙂

 @AFeller : Who doesn't have Canada-wide these days? Those with land-lines in Dryden might incur long distance charges but really, you can select any number with Canada-wide calling. Heck, choose an AB number and just pay GST.

@AFeller

Here's the list with the exchanges provided earlier....

  1. MINDEMOYA
  2. MOONSTOWE
  3. KIRKLAND LAKE
  4. HESPELLER
  5. ENGLEHART
  6. ALGOMAMNES
  7. LISTONER
  8. STAYNER

If I misspelled....I can't read my own scibbles!!

Edit: Oh yeah and THUNDERBAY!

Looks like a real nice area you live in!! Any cities close that are not LD to choose from? Or ask a friend what their first 6 digits are and go from there. Check here for first 6 digits.

Choose the one closest to you to pick a number.

See here. https://localcallingguide.com/lca_listexch.php?page=15&region=ON

I don't know if this list is for land lines only...or both.

@AFeller

Ohhhh.....you live in north western Ontario where telus is scarce.....here are the exchanges they currently have....234, 235, 456 ( my fave!) 706, 707, 708 and 709.

Look at this.

You want to find your Rate Centre. Or one closest to you.

PM does not offer service in all locations...I forget the reason...but some one will fill us in.

Is Dryden still a local city run phone company?.

I live in Dryden On. Closets city is Thunder Bay, or Kenora but Kenora is listed weird.

Some old Telco districts remain under the same name and may not be the name your City goes by right now.

ie.. I live in Maple Ridge BC and years ago the main name was Haney. And Public Mobile will show Haney as a city to choose from and NOT Maple Ridge. If you are in BC @AE_Collector can help you.

@AE_Collector

Yeah I agree -- I only mentioned it because OP has already compromised and chosen a number outside of his home area (Thunder Bay vs Dryden). Maybe best choice if that is a local call for some people who will be calling. Otherwise, if you have no ties to a particular geography, the province with the lowest tax would be a candidate. 😋

Another scenario that one of my referrals ran into was Kamloops BC. Not on the list. Having worked in Kamloops on the telephone exchange there many years ago I knew that the City of Kamloops is “South Kamloops” to BC Tel/TELUS to differentiate from the exchange on the other side of the river that is known as North Kamloops. Sure enough, South Kamloops is on the drop down list.

@Nezgar

That suggestion needs to come with a warning that some people may not be able to call you without incurring Long DIstance charges though. In particular callers using a traditional landline. And that might be enough to have them say “Hmm, I must have written the number down wrong” and give up. If it was a job application or something you are trying to sell or....

Darn, yeah I checked and confimred indeed Telus (PM's parent) doesn't have a switch there.... Dryden Municipal Telephone System, Bell, Rogers and TBayTel do... but no Telus.. oh well!

PS if you don't care about the area code, you could also pick an Alberta number and save 8% tax 😉

Thank you! I chose Thunder Bay as this is the closest city to me Eventhough it's 4 hours away.

That means that Public Mobile does not offer phone numbers for that city or that they have ran out of numbers for it.  I would look thorugh the complete list because some of the time, rate centres are named based based on old town or village names, rather than the current name of the municipality.  For example, Mississauga, Ontario will be shown as names such as Streetsville or Cooksville.

Assuming that Public Mobile simply hasn't ran out of city for this city, this would also mean that numbers from this city cannot be ported to Public Mobile.

As for a picking a number from a nearby city, this can potentially work out the same if that city has the exact same local calling area. However, there are sometimes slight variations.  The city of the phone number that you pick doesn't make any difference for outoginjg phone calls. The city of your number only makes a difference for people who are trying to call you.  Choosing a neigboring city could possibly make calling you long distance for other to reach you, but whether that will cost your contact extra is dependent on the other person's plan.

@AFeller Is this for choosing a phone number? If yes, pick the closest city to you that would be included in the local calling area.
