Data suggestion - throttled (trickle) data once limit reached ?

sbreakin

I did some searching & didn't see anyone suggest this yet.

(There is this thread that mentions no data overage charge as it just stops:  https://productioncommunity.publicmobile.ca/t5/Plans-Add-Ons/Data-overages/m-p/434398#M53820)

I was wondering whether it's possible to allow throttled data (trickle data) once one reaches their limit.

Unless I'm mistaken it appears Lucky, Freedom & even Chatr seem to have this on their pre-paid admittedly 128 or 62 is fairly limited but would allow MMS & basic access (sounds like WhatsApp still works).

Love PM & their plans and rewards & even the newly discounted data add-on, which we just added for daughters plan.  But throttled data would be nice.

If throttled unlimited data is just wanted as a stop gap possibly for a day or two then putting PM's rewards towards purchase of a 1Gb add-on or two is the way to keep the best of both worlds. It Isn't throttled (more than usual), can last a long time, can be paid for out of earned rewards that other providers dont offer and you don't have to leave PM to accomplish this.

A couple of things from PM that would be nice if there are no unlimited data plans coming:

-One more larger Data add-on at a better price still, probably 5Gb.

-One more plan (at minimum) filling the gap between the 1 Gb and 5 Gb plans making "proper initial plan selection" more do-able.

Sure PM has its benefits, if it wasn't the best choice we probably wouldn't be here but that doesn't mean it couldn't be better... of course we can't expect everything but we should be open to suggestions.

@jor123 I have to disagree with your interpretation of @zblackma 's reply. I don't think it was hostile in the least. I saw it as simply stating the facts as he sees them, without any feel good words. I think people need to learn to just take what is written for what it is and not try and read into it, something that isn't there. Just my opinion.

I have 2 phones. One is here with PM and I am happy with ALL the service I get, knowing full well what I was signing up for. Anything over and above that is gravy to me. My second is with a global cell provider (it works virtually everywhere in the world) that charges me per minute and per text sent. They have done nothing in response to this pandemic and honestly, I expect nothing from them.

As was stated a few times by others, if the unlimited (throttled) data is critical to someone, they really should go to a company that offers it, at least for the duration of this crisis. Again, just my 2 cents worth, not intending to offend anyone.

There's nothing wrong with making a suggestion. I'm not sure why there is so much hostility to criticism of PM on these forums. Lucky and Chatr existing and being options doesn't mean anyone who suggests PM improve their offerings should just go to them.

The trickle data I would not be a fan of. I really think most of us and I stress most. That just needs to change how we use data. Wifi is available almost everywhere this is not 2003.

Although with that said I have a buddy that works for CN and he's often in places where he has no wifi available. But the Plan is on is 80G of data on his phone. pays through the nose for that data.

would you not say that most of us could just change how we use our data?

or am I way off here?

Gosh thanks for the reply @ShawnC13   I think i started with trickle data  which isn't the common terminology.

Well appears that this is a popular topic & has come up before quite a few times. Sorry if I'm duplicating.  Last time i checked on this last fall it was mostly Freedom but their plans with it started higher.

From your links - the requests start fall 2019 which appears to be about the time Lucky added some throttled data to $25 & up plans.

I have to admit i prefer the PM REWARDS which result in lower costs for plans - which no one else has.

I tend to think most folks would choose a plan, price & data to suit their need rather than cheaping out (if thread is accurate $25+ plan) & making do with dial up speeds.

If i had to choose I'd choose the current system of PM rewards & data add-on.  Or perhaps trickle data could be an add-on also (for extra say $5 or such) ?  (best of both worlds)

Good points @geopublic .  I would rather have rewards that reduce the price of pre-paid plans.

From my search Freedom, Lucky & CHatr seemed to have pre-paid plans with some that were not too expensive (& cheaper than post paid) & seemed to have some throttled data (hard to find the fine print over at Freedom).

I was just thinking be nice to have a bit of throlled/ slow data for minor things, rather than early renew.

The data add-on we did buy already for my daughter & the $15 for 1Gb is great deal.  This would be good for folks that used data up faster & want to continue with 'normal' 3G data.

I didn't think it would impact peoples plan decision that much as the other 3 have various full data amounts at increasing prices already & folks choose the plan they can afford.

For ourselves we already have one of PMs cheaper plan for daughter as she gets used to using it (the 1Gb data add-on has laster much longer than i expected).

@sbreakin I agree, this would be a great option for PM's plan, and I would love to have it. Hope it will be introduced in the future.

Yes please have this feature! ❤️

The big 3 telecoms offer this but obviously they are rather expensive and probably not what you were looking at anyways.

Yes you are correct that lucky mobile and chartr offer that but at least for chartr there is no way to reduce the price of said plan whereas public mobile can be reduced to a $0 phone plan.

Obviously as a company that runs public mobile Telus It would be hard to believe they would implement it as they would get less revenue then they would have gotten if they didn’t implement it. But still would be another great benefit for public mobile and get a lot of people to switch to it.

The only way I can seem them actually doing that if it’s a limited time plan promotion only for new customers

I would really like to see this as well.

@sbreakin

I don't think PM will implement super slow data speed after consuming monthly data.

I teach my children on "living within means".  I told my kids that their plan has xGB data. Data will stop working if all used before end of 30 days.

Have a better and better day!

@sbreakin , we would all love to see a service that is a combination of the best attributes in the industry.  That ain't gonna happen.  It is always about compromise.  Get this service for what it is and not what you want it to be.  This make for a happy customer.  😁

throttled data would be nice, but not sure as a discounted carrier they would be able to bring that to their customers. PM already offers decent discounts. But good suggestion definitely keep them coming!

It’s a good suggestion, PM, takes in consideration members suggestions, once we reach our limit we can purchase additional data addons currently 1gb for $15 never expires, if we go over we have that buffer

@sbreakin  You are correct Lucky and Chatr currently offer this feature. Public does not offer this as of yet. I personally don't mind though because I can purchase 1 GB data add-on currently for $15 that never expires until used up.

If and when I run out of data the data add-on kicks in and then I have the option of renewing my plan early or moving up to a plan that offers more data.

gblackma

@sbreakin PM doesn't offer that at the moment. The unlimited  throttled data would have to be a perk offered by PM  itself. Would be nice though. Stay safe.
