Can I purchase and use any of the US Roaming Addons if my plan has no talk, no text and/or no data?

Vandypants

Hi PM Community,

I'm traveling to Maui in the next 2 weeks and I wanted to use PM, because it's the cheapest rate for the 2 weeks I will be away. I already purchased a SIM.

My question is if I activate it and choose a No Talk, No Text, No Data plan, can I purchase and use any of the US Roaming Addons or do I need, at the minimum, a plan with Talk on it?

Thanks!

z10user4 thanks for the suggestion! This is my 2nd time to Maui it is is a great place. It will be nice to get away from the cold and see some sun.

I'll have to estimate the amount of calls, texts, MMS and data I may use with H20, and compare that to PM's offerings.

I already bought a PM SIM, so the decision may be already made for me.

Wow, a BB OS10 phone. Classic.

 @Vandypants

Estimate shmestimate! Put the phone down and raise your eyes and enjoy.

You're in $10 for the SIM. Then the basic plan for $10. That's $20. $40 for unlimited talk/text and total of 1.25gb of data (or just one feature for $8). For 10 days (depending on how long you're there for). That totals $60 (or $28).

H2O. $11US for a SIM and some startup money in the pot. Then you consume that pot of money with your usage...be it calls or text or data/mms. Real, true, pay-as-you-go service. You get a local number. You walk away from it when you leave just like here. You won't want to carry around your phone when you're in the pool or ocean anyway. So how much are you *really* going to use it?

Even at a buck 40 that's about $15CDN.

Keep your SIM for when you're back home and come join the party here then.

My phone still does what I need it to do. Only a couple things are problematic and they aren't that important.

Well that was a waste of typing and effort to even think about.

No. Change Plan, choose the nothing options, can't even proceed with it. I had the Available Funds to do the $10 nothing plan but I'm not going to put in more to try the 90 day nothing plan. Maybe someone else with more Available Funds a day or so before the end of their term could try it. I renew on maintenance night so I decided to see what would happen.

I know I’ve read that you do not need a talk or sms plan to use any of the US talk, sms, or data roaming addons, but having no base plan is not a plan in Canada.

Curious though that in the BYOP you can click on the 30 day choice, click No Talk, click No Text, click No Data and it gives a total of $10. Even curiouser...select 90 days and those things and it does NOT come out to $30. It's $25.

It seems to say that in the Change Plan area as well. But no I haven't tried it.

@stonechucker @Anonymous you cannot activate a new account with the base plan, nor can you switch your plan to it if you have an active account already.  It is not a valid plan, and you can't choose it.

 @Tav you would have no number, however, you would not have an active account or line as you cannot proceed with the base plan without any services (see above)

-------------------------------------------

To summarize:

- The no talk, no text, no data "plan" is not a plan.  It's the base on which you must add at least one service in order to have a valid plan.  The system won't let you actually commit this choice

- The no talk, no text, no data "plan" for $10 is exactly the same cost as the $10/50/50 plan, so there's literally no reason to even try to choose it (not that the system would let you)

- Roaming services do not depend on you having the equivalent service in your plan.  In other words, if you have a data-only plan at home, you can still purchase a talk or text US roaming add-on; if you have a talk + text plan at home you could still choose US Roaming data with or without US roaming talk or text -- there is no dependency on specific domestic services

- HOWEVER, the only dependency is that that you do have to have an active account, with a valid plan--which the base plan is not.

@Tav I believe he would get a number because before he actually choses his plan he will have to go through the activation process, which includes choosing a number.

@Anonymous, yes, thé #10 and #25 are thé base amounts, of the base plans.  Voice, sms, and data each have their own values, and pick 2 or more options of talk, sms, or data give different discounts.

Back in the day, the 90-day plans were cost savings, over the 30*day options.

i have no idea if this is possible on a no selection base plan.  For security of service, the $10 50/50 is the same price as no plan, so pick the 50/50 as your base, then get the desired addon(s) for US Roaming.

I'm home. 😞

 @Vandypants: If you aren't currently using PM then forget about roaming. Go to Target not far from the airport on your way to your destination (if you're renting a car) and get the yellow H2O SIM and real, true, pay-as-you-go service for $11US. $1 for the SIM and $10 to get you going. Works on AT&T. Get it all going online and the fun part is that you would have a local 808 number.

As for roaming...the policy here states that you have to have talk in your base plan. But that has been found to be not entirely true in reality.

It's also known that you can receive texts in the states without any roaming add-on. Not outgoing.

The funny thing I discovered was that I was also able to receive calls....again without any roaming add-on and again...no outgoing.

No data...although it seems I can't edit the APN in my antique BB OS10 phone.

If you haven't been to Maui before, you'll love it.

@Carld123

Not sure if you are joking... No talk, no text, no data is not a plan.  It's the base fee, you'll NEED at least one base feature to make it an active plan in good standing.

I am not sure why you would chose a no talk, no text no data for $10 where, if it was possible the US roaming would not work as opposed to choosing the $10 talk, text, data plan that cost.....well the the same thing.... and all add-ons will work.

You will need an active "in Canada" plan for the roaming to work. The $10 50minutes/50texts will be sufficient.

@Vandypants

You need some basic plan.  The $10 plan for 50 minutes/50 text would work for your purposes.  If you sign up for autopay, the plan would be $8 ($2 monthly credit).
