Came over a month ago from Telus:
Pixel 3 text messages do not work on data. Texting only works on wifi.
making phone calls and recieving phone calls works on wifi & data
Internet browser does not work on data - BUT all apps on phone can be used when in the car or at the gym no problem.

Am using the native Google Messages app.

Suggestions? Thanks!

@kerrikitty  Google Pixel devices will automatically setup the correct APN settings for Public Mobile so there is no need to change them.

@kerrikitty sounds like you have a few issues.

1- You mentioned text over wifi/data. This means you have RCS turned on. So you have chat features like chat bubble, read receipts, when person is typing back to you than you see .... .... ...... RCS does not use the standard text system. It uses either wifi or data and has nothing to do with the traditional text system. It's like iMessage on an iPhone that works over wifi/data.

You should turn RCS off to save your data (when we try to fix data below) and just use the traditional SMS/MMS system.

As for calling over Wi-Fi/Data PM does not offer wifi calling so I don't believe that's happening. It's likely using the cell network.

For your data not working. You need to check the APN settings on your pixel. They might be incorrect.

Add this apn.

Save and reboot and try your internet (with wifi turned off). If that don't work try these APN settings.

Once you get your apn settings sorted and your Internet is working then you should be ok. Remember to turn off RCS on your phone to use the traditional text system. To send/receive pictures you need to have mobile data turned on. When MMS runs through the traditional text system and not RCS sending picture messages does not count towards your data allotment but it needs to be on to send /receive.  If you have RCS turned on then that uses wifi or data and that data is not included and goes towards your allotment.

As for your iPhone's you likely have to change some settings on those phones as well. Like turning SMS and MMS on in your setting.

Calls don't use wifi or data. Does your car have built-in internet and does your gym have wifi? That would explain internet working at those locations. Texting messaging doesn't use data either but since internet doesn't work, this is probably an APN issue or you ran out of data. How much data does your account show as remaining. If self serve shows nothing about data, it was all used. Did data work earlier after you came from Telus?

@kerrikitty reset your network settings

open settings
scroll down to system
tap on reset options
tap reset wifi,mobile & Bluetooth
tap reset settings and restart

The messages app doesn't have settings that affect SMS though.
"Advanced" only gives me:
auto download MMS/Auto download when roaming
use simple characters
get SMS delivery reports
service messages
wireless emergency alerts
sim card messages
phone number

.. all the these things, aside from the phone number are the same on both.

@kerrikitty  Go into your messages app select settings disable chat features and test sending a text. If it works then wait 4 hours and then you can try to enable the chat features if you wish to be able to send texts via data to other RCS users.

@kerrikitty Take the two android phones (one that works and the one that doesn't) side by side. Open up the messaging options and compare the two. Something is set differently on the one that doesn't work.

@kerrikitty I still don't get what you mean by phone calls only work on wifi and data. Neither is required to make or receive phone calls.

Fixed. meant wifi & data.

SMS works on all 3 other phones that came over from telus as well
2 are iphone, 1 is android and they can all SMS no problem.

Using RCS (with wifi) the messages send. When sending a message to someone who uses an iphone, it would send as an SMS instead of RCS. it works to send as an SMS through the messages app with wifi, to the iphone users, but with wifi off it won't send anything or let anything come in.

@kerrikitty Test messages (SMS) do not need data and do not use wifi. They use the cellular network. MMS messages need data turned on to send and receive and they do not use wifi. Are you by chance using the new RCS (iphone messaging type) protocol?

Not sure what you mean by making and receiving phone calls works on wifi and SMS?
