Phone shows no service...

doof
Great Neighbour / Super Voisin

So I've got a Pixel 2 XL and  a couple days ago it started showing that I don't have phone service... It shows bars with an X on it.

Most of the time the phone seems to work, but sometimes I can't receive calls though.

I've restarted my phone several times and also pulled the SIM card and it didn't make a difference.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

@kajoshi78

I had a similar problem a month back. I had to switch phones to check my SIM card is ok or not. Turned out that it had some problem and needed to be replaced 😮.

@doofBetter to rule out this possibility.

HI @doof ,

It sounds like you already tried some of these things, and some of this may be repeating what others have suggested - but here this is:

How to fix Google Pixel 3 XL No Signal issue

Step 1:  Refresh the system

Before you do any software changes, it’s good idea if you can refresh the system first. If you are unable to use your Pixel 3 XL normally nor restart it the traditional way, try to do a forced reboot. Simply press and hold the Power button for about 10 seconds. Afterwards, wait for your phone to complete the reboot sequence and see what happens.

Step 2: Reseat SIM card

Another troubleshooting step that you want to do early on is to see if a bug has developed that’s tied to the SIM card. To do this, you want to remove SIM card from the phone to see what happens. Be sure to power down your Pixel 3 XL first before you do this step.

To remove a SIM card from your Pixel 3 XL:

  1. Turn off your Google Pixel 3.
  2. Prepare the SIM card ejector tool or SIM card removal tool
  3. Insert the SIM removal tool into the hole in the SIM tray. This tray is found on the left hand side of your phone.
  4. Make sure to push the SIM card ejector tool firmly until the SIM card tray is ejected.
  5. Remove the SIM card from the tray.

After disconnecting the SIM card, wait for at least 10 seconds before putting it back in. Then, turn the phone back on and check for the problem.

Step 3: Insert SIM to another phone

There’s a chance that the problem may have something to do with your SIM card. If you have another compatible device, insert your SIM card to it and see if it can get signals from your network. If the SIM card works on another device, you should continue troubleshooting your Pixel 3 XL.

If the second device will have the same No Signal issue when the SIM is in it, then that’s obviously a SIM card or account problem. Visit your local carrier’s store and get a new SIM card. While at it, be sure to also ask them to check if there’s any provisioning problems with your account.

  Step 4: Reset network settings

The next troubleshooting step to do after checking the SIM card is to force the phone to delete all network settings. This is usually effective in fixing network problems. Here’s how to do it:

  1. From a Home screen, touch and swipe up to display all apps.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap System.
  4. Tap About.
  5. Tap Advanced.
  6. Tap Reset options.
  7. Choose from the following:
    • Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth
    • Reset app preferences
    • Erase all data (factory reset)
  8. Select Reset settings.
  9. If prompted, enter the PIN, password or pattern.
  10. Tap Reset settings to confirm.
Step 5: Check for downloaded app issue

One of the common reasons for many Android issues is apps. Not all apps are created equal so there’s always a chance that one of the apps you’ve downloaded is problematic. To see if that’s the case, try to boot the phone to safe mode. Safe mode suspends all apps you’ve downloaded, allowing only pre-installed ones to run.

To restart your Pixel 3 XL to safe mode:

  1. Press and hold the Power button.
  2. On your screen, touch and hold Power off.
  3. Tap OK.
  4. After you see “Safe mode” at the bottom of your screen, wait to see if the problem goes away.

Remember, safe mode blocks third party or downloaded apps. If the problem goes away in safe mode, you can bet one of the apps is to blame. To identify which of your downloaded apps is causing the problem:

  1. To exit safe mode, restart your device.
  2. One by one, uninstall recently downloaded apps. After each removal, restart your device. See whether removing that app solved the problem.
  3. After you remove the app that’s causing the problem, you can reinstall the other apps that you removed.
  Step 6: Factory reset

If all the troubleshooting steps above won’t solve the freezing issue on your Pixel 3 XL, the final software troubleshooting step that you can do is to wipe it. This way, you can return all software settings back to their defaults in one stroke. If the reason for the problem is software related, factory reset will most likely help.

To factory reset your Pixel 3 XL:

  1. Create a backup of your personal data.
  2. Make sure to know the username and password for Google account in the phone.
  3. Open Settings app.
  4. Tap System.
  5. Tap Advanced.
  6. Tap Reset options.
  7. Tap Erase all data (factory reset) and then Reset phone. If needed, enter your PIN, pattern, or password.
  8. To erase all data from your phone’s internal storage, tap Erase everything.
  9. When your phone has finished erasing, pick the option to restart.
  10. Set up your phone and restore your backed-up data.
Step 7: Contact your network operator

@doof

Just to get to the cause, you may want to do the following:

  1. Replace the Public Mobile SIM card with any other working SIM card. This will help you ensure whether or not your cell phone is blacklisted.
  2. Replace the PM SIM card with another PM SIM card, if handy. It will help you ensure if the SIM card itself has some problem - or - test your PM SIM card in another cell phone and check if the network is available.
  3. If your SIM card works on another phone, and another SIM card works on your phone (as you would have used before replacing with the PM SIM card, presumably) then check out the settings. To rule out any possibilities with the software, you may reset the phone to factory settings (after backing up the data of course).
  4. I have noticed network unavailability (the X-mark) sometimes. But most often it gets restored within few minutes. It may be in certain places.

Not so easy to do all above, but may help you get to the cause of the problem.

@doof  Make sure your device is not set to use LTE only as making/receiving calls requires 3G.

It's also possible that you are in an area that is spotty. If the problem continues then submit a ticket to PM and ask them to reset your account.

@doof

When you cant recieve calls do they go straight to voicemail? Do you have issues calling out at the same time? Poor reception? Or just a poor signal?

If its a network issue it could just be your connection. Turn airplane mode on. Wait one minute. Turn airplane mode off. This will re-establish a new connection with the network and will clear up calling and texting issues.

Alternatively if its mostly recieving calls going straight to voicemail then its a sim card issue. Log into your account and use the lost/stolen feature to report your phone lost. Log out. Wait 1 min. Log in and report found. Log out and reboot phone. This will reprovision your sim card. Test by having someone call you.

@doof

Is your account status active or suspended?

Where did you purchase your phone?  secondhand?  If used phone, is it possible that the phone was blacklisted?
