ASUS Zenfone 2 ZE551ML (China, India)

mermantraut

Im looking to get the ASUS Zenfone 2 ZE551ML (China, India) from ebay and I wanted to know if it would be compatible with public mobile. when I checked willmyphonework.net  it says it will work with 3g 850Mhz/1900mhz and 4g comes up with Band 40-2300Mhz.

Will this phone work with 3G and 4G?

This is true.  The China + India version has these LTE bands:

LTE band 1(2100), 3(1800), 38(2600), 39(1900), 40(2300), 41(2500) - China & India

Unfortunately, none of those are helpful with PM.  But it should still work at HSPA+ speeds.

You should be able to get a used Zenfone 2 that is the North American version from eBay for that price.   In my opinion, trying to purchase a version of a model that wasn't meant for use in Canada is a bad idea, particularly when there was a version released that was meant for use here.  When the device is version meant for a different part of the world, the network compatability sometimes isn't there because of different supported frequencies, never mind the fact that you will have zero warranty for the device even when purchasing new.

The original Zenfone 2 wasn't even that great of device.  It had crappy battery life, a very dim screen and a rear mounted speaker that was so quiet that as soon as you step outside, you pretty much can't hear it. it is also running outdated software and will receive no further updates of any kind (including security updates).  It also has an Intel Atom processor, meaning that there are some apps that just don't work for this phone.  Qualcomm is more of the standard.

The Zenfone 2 Laser was a much better device, although they are similar.

Compared to others phone models that were released during this time around 2015, the Alcatel Idol 3 5.5 inch and Moto X Play are superior in almost every way.  And, they are avaiable fairly cheap.

That one popular site that has been referenced many times (can't remember which one) continues to insist that Public Mobile has 2g.  I've even messaged them about it. They never bothred to correct their mistake (and at this point, I don't think they ever will).

Ya, I am aware 2G network has been shut down.

I am using a different website actually.

Public Mobile never had a 2g GSM network.  The website being referenced is giving incorrect information.

The specs listed almost look like that of the variant sold by Asus in North American, even complete with the accidental omission of Band 4 for 3g.  The North American Zenfone 2 version did have that (worked on Mobilicty, Wind, Videotron AWS 3g), but many/most sites failed to mention this.

I would understand this if you already had the phone and didn't want to purchase a new one, but since you're looking to purcahse a device, why not just get the North American variant of this phone?  The North American variant of the Zenfone 2 was sold both at retail and online at authorized sellers.

I would also consider the Zenfone 3 Laser, or Zenfone 4 series models (newer software, more recent, etc.).

You should know that there are reports of people with Asus phones running Android 8.1 having trouble getting data to work because of APN setting restrictions in the software.

We have found https://willmyphonework.net to be quite accurate. So this phone will be fine on PM's 3G network for all services but will have no LTE. See: https://productioncommunity.publicmobile.ca/t5/Knowledge-Base/Getting-Started/ta-p/162 for PM bands.
