A slightly more complicated solution, that offers more flexibility:

1. Open an account with Voip.ms and charge it with $10 credit.

2. Port the number you want to keep to that account whenever you want.

3. On your return from vacation, open a Public Mobile account (or any other carrier, for that matter) and port your number from Voip.ms.

@raghu

When is your next payment date?  If you remove your autopay, your account will be then suspended on your next due date.  If you return less than 90 days, then your account should be fine when you re-activate.

Your account can be inactive for 90 days until your phone number is lost forever.  It depends on when your account becomes suspended.  Your account page will let your know when is the last day before your account/number is permanently closed.
