Autopay should have withdrawn from the balance first, then take the payment of the difference if balance was not enough.

Check your payment history, if that's not what happened contact moderators to make sure it doesn't repeat the next time.

Is that the only account you have with public mobile?

Any credit balance is used to pay for the next renewal payment, or can be used to purchase add-ons.
