switch from Koodo

H-man

I would like to switch my service from Koodo to Public mobile. I have just paid off my tab, (which will be included on my next statement (July 2)) and was wondering if I could switch my service immediately or, am I required to wait until Koodo receives payment.

@H-man

Once koodo receives your 24th payment (on a 2 year contract) you can switch to public mobile.  If your last contractual payment is on your next statement (July 2nd) there is nothing stopping you from making that payment now so it is recieved and processed by koodo on or before July 2nd. It sounds like you're postpaid so porting out will close your account and you will only owe a prorated amount of the next month (25th month) used (1 day?)

If you are prepaid then you'll want to "port" out before your monthly plan ends. Once koodo receives and credits your account with your 24th payment you are contractually free to port out at that time without added costs. If you wanted to take advantage of a promotion that ends june 30th you could activate with public mobile on that day with a temporary number and port your number in later (as you would have to do with prepaid koodo accounts anyways) or port in on the 30th from your post paid account once confirmed its recieved payment and just lose a couple days of service you've just finished paying off.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll probably wait until the contract is complete before switching.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news

Have you read your contract and/or ask Koodo what is the amount of penalty if you cancel now.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll probably wait until the contract is complete before switching.

You can switch right away if you like. You’ll still have access to your Koodo account for three months; I strongly suggest you log in every month to make sure everything is paid up and the account has successfully transferred and closed.

Just a word of caution.  Koodo had changed its contract last August to claw back the phone credit if you cancel your plan before 24 months.  If you got a new phone on Koodo tab around and after August 2019, read your contract carefully.  Tab is a 0% phone loan from Koodo which you pay $10/m or more depending on the tab you took when you got your phone.  Phone credit is the amount which lowers the cost of the phone at the time of getting a Koodo phone on tab.

For an example,  a phone listed on Koodo as $1000 phone.  Koodo may offer to lower the price by $760 so that you can get a small tab = $240 = $10/m for 24 month.  If you pay off your tab, you still have the $760 phone credit to pay back if you cancel your plan before the end of the 24 months period.

For the old Koodo contract before August 2019, your obligation is pay your tab amount if you cancel before 24 months.

For the new Koodo contract after August 2019, you obligation is to pay your tab and the phone credit if you cancel your Koodo plan before 24 months.  In other word, you are paying full retail price of your Koodo phone if you cancel your Koodo plan early.

You would get a prorated bill if you switch now. So if you are in the middle of your cycle then you will likely get a credit.

Totally up to you if you want to switch now or wait until your cycle ends, just make sure you do not cancel your service.

Have a wonderful day!

You can switch over now but I would wait until the near end of your current plan cycle at Koodo to switch. I'm assuming you're on postpaid because of the tab, which means you're paying for this "last month" already so you might as well use it to the end to get the most out of your payment.

Welcome 🙂 Don't forget to enter a referral code when you activate with PM!

@H-man , you should be able to switch when you get the bill with the final tab payment.  Leaving before actually paying the bill does not relieve you of the obligation to pay that bill of course.

You would need to purchase a sim and then you can port your phone over to PM. You need your Koodo account active during the porting process. Once the port is completed your Koodo account will be closed.

I assume you want to keep your existing phone number, so as long as your number is still active with Koodo you can start the process and port your number right away.

Welcome to PM.

@H-man welcome to PM. Once your account is paid up. You can switch now. Though its not required I would recommend getting your phone  unlocked. If you are coming from Koodo postpaid, you can port on activation. Koodo prepaid requires you to activate your SIM card with a temporary cell phone number and contact the moderators to port. Welcome to PM.  Stay safe.
