I would go to the store where you brought the phone to be sure thet sold you an unlocked one.

Try the compability test. That should help.

@ottilien  BTW, Brand new apple phones can still be locked.

The Apple stores have separate prcing for unlocked phones, and if the salesperson makes a mistake, it is fully possible to be sold a carrier locked device by mistake.

Try connecting your phone to a computer with your sim card in the phone. Sometimes, when switching sim cards (if you had a different carrier's sim card in there before), it is necessary to activate the device while connecting to the Apple server. I know iTunes is the old-fashioned way of activation but it is stil a method that should work.

@ottilienSIM not supported means the iPhone is not unlocked.. but have you connected the phone to a wifi network, the iPhone needs to look up your activation status from the Apple server.

@ottilien  Are you absolutly sure its unlocked? Sometimes we think our phone is unlocked, but its actually locked. Try sim in another unlocked phone. that will isolate a sim issue vs a hardware issue.
