How to enter referral code if missed to add during activation

For me, what usually happens is a red bar with an error message saying something about an HTMl link, but when I resubmit, it works. I don't usually "lose" messages unless there's a sudden drop in the internet connection, although I have had it happen before before because the site was having issues.
