Data use on $15 pay as you go plan

Hello. Newbie here. A friend and I just purchased the $15 pay as you go plan with the Bonus 250MB data. The plan includes unlimited text and picture messaging but she was told to have her daughter turn off the data while on WIFI so that the plan doesn’t automatically use data for this. We are confused as when we looked up the details of the plan it says the following... can someone please help us understand what will be charged for data and if the kids should turn off data roaming until they need to use it for something. Thank you.

(3) Includes text and picture messaging. Premium and subscription-based messaging, to and from non-Canadian numbers, are not included. Picture messaging on BlackBerry smartphones requires the BlackBerry 10 operating system. Talk, text, and data services refer to services offered while connected to the TELUS/Public Mobile network in your local calling area (Province-wide or Canada-wide) (ex. Calls must originate from Canada). For service when not connected to your local calling area (ex. You are outside of Canada), a roaming package must be purchased.

@nakfam

If she turns off automatic update, switches to update on wifi only, restricts background data, and disables the wifi assist (so that the phone doesn't use data when wifi is weak) it's ok she doesn't have to keep data off.

If she can remember that she's using data and will drain it quickly, it's ok.

People get annoyed turning on and off data for MMS, they often forget to turn it off.

Public mobile keeps track of data used for MMS and will not count it towards your usage, but the data must be on

@nakfam what is the make and model of the phone in question.? Basically they are saying that all calls and texts must originate from within Canada.  Welcome to PM. Stay safe.

Welcome to Public Mobile 🙂

The $15 plan includes.

  • Incoming free calls
  • 100 outgoing minutes
  • Unlimited worldwide text

If you add autopay to your account you get a 250mb data bonus as well as a $2 discount per 30 days.

To add it. Log into your account and click "Payment" then "Manage autopay"

You need data turned on to send and receive MMS messages. MMS does not count towards your data allotment.

If you adjust your phone settings correctly you can keep your data on no worries.

Meaning adjust your apps to only run on wifi and not use data.

If google maps are used. Set it to wifi only and use offline maps..

Any phone updates and any other updates should be WiFi only .

If there is wifi + or Wi-Fi assist on the phone which automatically connects to data when Wi-Fi signal is weak. That should be turned off.

Then you should be good to go.

Or you can leave data off and only turn it on when you need it as well as to receive an MMS. You'd get a text saying "download now" which you'd have to turn data on to receive the picture. Or turn it on for a second to send a picture.

In any event there are NO OVERCHARGE. Once you use up your data it stops completely. Then you would have to buy a data add-on, contact mods to renew early or go into your account and change to a higher plan.

Again welcome to Public Mobile and if you used a referral code when activating for a $10 signup bonus please allow 72 hours for it to be applied.

Hello @nakfam  and welcome to your and your friend to Public Mobile!

One of the great things about Public Mobile's in market plans is that if you run out of minutes or data you do not get charged any overages. You will have the option to buy addons though if you run out until your next renewal.

Some apps do use data in the back ground even with wifi access. So it is good practice to toggle off your data when in wifi zones. As for roaming...you only get charged that when outside of Canada.

PM tracks the data used my picture MMS separately from the browser or app data usage.  Therefore, data used by MMS will not count against your plan 250MB data.  All you need to do is enable data on her phone.  Make sure the phone update apps or OS on wifi only.  Configure Twitter and FB not to download pictures automatically.
