I couldn't make phone call and text suddenly, it happened several times, all at school. What's wrong?

A better test would be a phone call. Call a friend who is available to pick up the call. Then have them call you back to see if it goes to voicemail. Then call your son and see if it goes straight to voicemail. Then send your son a text. Have him text you at a prearranged time when you are at the school. Do the same again when you are both in the car at the school. Make a note of how long or how far away from the school you are when you both get the texts.
It is likely the school is in a dead zone or the upgrading of cell towers or maintenance on the local cell tower is causing issues with the signal strength and connectivity. SMS texts take very little signal to go thru this indicates it is a dead zone.

it's possible due to the Cellular towers in the area, you can check:
https://www.ertyu.org/steven_nikkel/cancellsites.html
you can have you son and you both try to set to 3G only for couple days and see if that help in the school area.
Also, you can check with parents who are using Koodo/Telus/PM to see if they experience the same issue.
I would not be surprise it's a location/tower issue. This thing is very common, "dead spot"
another work around is to try to use apps to communicate while you pick your kids up. Maybe Whatsapp or so.

thank you for the information, actually, both I and my son use public mobile.
This only happened in my kid's school, when I picked him up, this is the only location.
Sometimes ok but sometimes bad.
It happened several times this year already, I texted him where I park the car, but he didn't get it, he received the text 1 hour later. Neither phone call nor text he could make at that time, he's angry. He hates to reboot and toggle into airplane mode, this sucks. Anyway, I ask him just give it a try next time. Whose phone has problems-me or my son?

@jennytsai do you have the same issue as the OP? maybe you can open a new thread for easy tracking
are you current user that your SIM was working before and just suddenly showing this? if so, reseat the sim and see how it goes , power down the phone, take the sim out , wipe it and put it back and power on.
If you are newly activated and the sim has not work yet, give us more details and will try to help.

If its intermittent then your sim card is probably a little loose or there may be dirt or debris in the sim slot or on the sim card. Remove the sim card and gently clean it with a q-tip and a little alcohol. Blow out any dust or debris from the slot. If the sim is loose use a paper shim or a little bit of carefully placed tape to secure it in the slot.

If after rebooting your phone, and trying to toggle into airplane mode for a minute does not work, check for any outages in the area:
Check for outages in your area: https://www.telus.com/en/on/outages
or https://downdetector.ca/status/telus/map/
It sounds like the service comes back though? Is this only in a certain area this happens?
Are you able to try your SIM into another compatible phone to rule out your phone or the network?

@alicelee both incoming and outgoing failed??
when phone calls fail, is mobile data working still?
did you try reseat the SIM and reboot the phone??
If still fails, try to change the network to 3G Only and see if it helps..

can you do try reseat the SIM card
1.power off your device
2.take out the SIM card,
3.wipe it clean SIM card,
4.put it back and power on,
5.toggling airplane mode off/on,
it happened sometime you know, A normal reboot without reset, didn't work. At least try it,
only work after reseating the SIM card.
can you try it selecting the network to "3G ONLY"
