when registering it advised me to keep my old number and request a change. I dont see where to change the number (to keep my current number from another provider, i think this is called porting?)

I have helped several of my friends switch over (helping another one tonight.... activated yesterday, porting today) and what I like to do is first use a new number to make sure that the sim activates and works fully, calling texting and data. After that I go back and port the old number in from the incumbant provider. This way I know it all works using the temp new number before porting.
Use the method listed above...

This is very easy and embedded in the SIM activation process.
You will be asked at one step if you want to keep your old phone number. You say yes, and enter the phone number to see if it is compatible. You can then simply add in the required information and you'll have your number transfer once you complete the activation process. The transfer can take at least a few hours, so be patient.

@rosie07 if you click on change number it will then ask you to pick a new number or transfer a number. To port a number you need to click transfer
