I am looking at signing up today and want to be sure about a few things. I am reading that voicemail may not be reliable if I am out of service. Any info on this would be welcome.
I also use an automated teaching callout called Smartfind and wonder if anyone has any experince with this.

Or set unconditional call forward. Then you can still keep your phone on for outgoing calls, texts, and data, as signal permits...

I would say that when outside of the servcie area, there's not much to the comment about voicemail not being reliable. If your phone is unreacheable, people who call you will automatically get directed to your voicemail.
In some cases, such as when going underground in a subway train, people who call you might hear more rings or even blank air before reaching your voicemail. It would eventually go there, even if there's a delay of a minute or two before it happens. To avoid this type of delay, a customers can turn off the phone while in an area where there is network signal.

Another idea...
If you work at a job with a desk phone with it's own direct inward dialing (DID) number, you can program your "unreachable" conditional call forward to that number, so anyone calling your number while out of coverage would go to your work phone instead of your personal voicemail, until you are back in coverage:
Set "unreachable" call forward: *62*xxxxxxxxxx#
Reset "unreachable call forward: ##62#
Or setup 2 speed dials to manually set or unset forwarding ALL calls unconditionally to your work DID:
Set: *21*xxxxxxxxxx#
Clear: ##21#
I use this last option just so I get calls to my land line while at work where I have a comfortable headset and better audio quality even with coverage.

As long as you have an active plan, voicemail should function normally. if your phone is off or out of the service area, busy (or you decline a call) or you don't answer after 25 seconds, it should forward incoming calls to your voicemail. All 'conditional' call forwards are set to your voicemail by default, but can be changed to point to any other number in Canada too...

I am frequently in a 'No Service' area at work due to a dead spot in coverage. If that is the case and someone is trying to get a hold of me, they are forwarded directly to voicemail where they can leave a mssg. Issue is I won't get the message until I get back to an area of service. I have to look for voice mail notifications in the phone app when I'm back in service as well. And yes, I wish there was better coverage where I work but weighing cost vs coverage/inconvenience, I feel it is worth it.
