Text and voice mails on PM number while using 2nd travel sim

I'll be doing some extended travel and plan to use a local sim in my Pixel 8. Does anyone know what will happen with texts, voice mails, or 2fa msgs when I've set the travel sim as primary? From what I can see here and in google help, i may be able to switch back and forth in order to see texts and VM's? It would be nice to somehow get 2fa msgs by switching to PM account (on wifi?)  before initiating banking transactions but I've no idea if that'll work. Seems like I've gotten texts over wifi while in the US? Hard to know/remember cause PM roaming in US is so wonky!

I'm hoping someone with real experience with this will chime in!

Cheers!

Sim settings are irrelevant in your case because your Public Mobile sim will be useless outside of Canada, the US, and Mexico. Zero service. No phone calls, no 2FA codes.

As a workaround you could sign up for a TextNow phone number and setup unconditional call forwarding before you leave Canada; forward your Public Mobile calls to your new TextNow number.

For SMS, the only workaround would be to leave your Public Mobile sim in a burner phone at home with a text forwarding app. It would need to be on and connected to a charger the whole time you're gone. Further, you'll probably want someone to check on it every so often to ensure a software update doesn't force a phone reboot that requires re opening the necessary apps. You can set the app to forward text messages to an email address to be able to receive 2FA codes.

I would recommend changing your 2FA method to email or authentication app wherever possible.

@Snodgett   You cannot receive 2fa texts when out of Public Mobile coverage area because they are typically sent as SMS.  You can access voicemail by dialing your number from another number, pressing * at the greeting, and then entering your voicemail PIN.  Some people use an app like Fongo or TextNow to call in to their voicemail over wifi (or local data).

You will not be able to retrieve texts or VM from your Public Mobile account if you are not in North America.

Thanks for the replies but I knew all that. IWhat i'm looking for is someone with actual experience travelling with travel sim set as primary. I'd like to hear real experiences with retrieving texts and VM from PM while travelling.

If you are planning on trip outside Canada, us or Mexico...you'll have no Public Mobile service at all.

It depends where your location is and your current PM plan. If you have the Canada/USA/Mexico plan…you will receive service in all 3 countries and you should receive the 2FA code.

If you are outside of the country (countries) in your plan then you will need to check with the local SIM.

You can also have the 2FA code sent to your email and login to your account.

Well @Snodgett , when you have two SIMS in your phone whether it be 2 eSIMs or 1 eSIM and a physical SIM, they will both work. If you are using say the Public Mobile line on a call, the other "SIM" will go to voicemail. And visa versa. Only one can work at a time. Now, depending on where you're going, Public Mobile only works in Canada, the USA and Mexico. Outside of that, you'd have to find a SIM for that country. Just change it to the primary as you're away and when you come back, switch it back. Here's an eSIM option outside of those three mentioned. https://www.airalo.com/
