It didn't ask for a PIN. it was a simple message. Later this message did not occur, just an error message which I captured but which will not display (I saw the total # files in \camera go up each time but could not find the capture image with any kind of sorting). It said basically the same things in more words.
I do have an old phone. Blackberry Z10. It has been great up to now. The situation seems to have rectified itself. I can now call and send and receive texts. It went through an intermediate phase after one reboot where some texts came in but I couldn't view them, only the brief preview, and I could start to make calls but could not access voicemail. Now, it seems I can do all these things.
