Re: international texting

Hi,

Just wanted to confirm, so if I'm overseas there's no way of me receiving a text from Canada?

Thanks,

Mark

There are some international/traveller SIM options ... but none that I could find will support Public Mobile. (In fact, almost all of them only support Rogers.)

Where is "overseas"?

It makes a big difference in the options you can choose from.

I have a friend who subscribes to a foreign operator which gives her a unlimited "roaming" across half of Asia and all of North America (plus an unbelievable amount of high-speed data) for an astonishingly low price. She even gets a (now 2 year old) "temporary" Canadian phone number so that incoming callers don't have to deal with long distance charges. The catch is that you can't sign up unless you can show up at one of their retail outlets in Singapore.

I've heard of similar sorts of multinational plans from China Mobile, Telstra, and Kyivstar (a "small" carrier based in Ukraine, covers all of Europe, most of Asia and Americas, etc).

When you are overseas you could receive messages from Canada or anywhere on your local oversee registered simcard but you can not send out messages (because your public mobile not working overseas) otherwise you are getting the local simcard from the service provider at overseas.

@Marektech

There are some apps available that allow you to forward your texts and you can access them online.

If you are traveling in the US no roaming add on is required to recieve texts on your pm sim/phone however a roaming add on is required to send them. Textnow helps bridge the need for an add on by allowing you to text or call on wifi.

Forwarding your number to fongo and leaving your sim in Canada will allow you to recieve calls to your pm phone number while abroad. If you get a local or global sim while traveling that has data it will then allow you uninterrupted incoming calling from your pm # as the fongo app allows calling both on wifi and mobile data.

@Marektech....

for use overseaas, download a free app like TextNow. Used with wifi, you'll have free calling /tetxting to most any US or Canada number. Most resorts, cafes and public spaces have free wifi available to use...you might have to ask for their wifi password.

On previous trips to Mx, we've used TextNow without problem. One of my relatives said it works good in Thailand...but that he got a local sim and cheap international calling/texting for a good price.

Safe travels.

@Marektech ,

only in US.  PM does not have Roaming other than US.

You might need to consider other mean of communication like Whatsapp, Signal.

@Marektech

Public mobile does not offer international roaming except for the United States.

There are some potential work arounds.  I have not tried personally. Using other apps like Whatsup.  Forwarding your phone to a service like Fongo.com.  Maybe others in the community can chime in.
