I was unable to find any information about the length of period when a plan terminates and new one must be started in order to keep the card/phone number valid. I am occasionally away for two or even three months at a time, and see no need to pay for plan/connectivity I can't use.

with PM, plan can only be suspended for no more than 90 days. Account will be closed after 90 days and you will lose the phone number
You can login My Account and check if your account is active or check the last day to pay before account is closed if account is suspended
you can also call *611 from your phone or call 1.855.4PUBLIC from another phone to get the account status or when is the last day you need to make a payment to resume service
