@stuartmcconkey after I manually selected T Mobile, it was possible to use my cell phone again
It's possible you were able to connect to T-Mobile's 2G network, which is being dismantled but still remains in some areas. The A50 is not on PM's "certofoed" VoLTE list here
https://www.publicmobile.ca/en/on/get-help/articles/volte
So you would likely have voice call issues (but not problems with data or texting) in the USA. While back in Canada you can do a test. Turn off wifi, turn on cellular data, make a phone call. If the phone stays on LTE when you make a phone call then it indicates VoLTE, if it drops to 3G (or sometimes 4G) then it likely won't work well in the USA except where T-Mobile's 2G still exists. A phone can be LTE capable but not necessarily VoLTE capable/approved.

I solved the problem on my A50 Samsung that is LTE. The phone automatically selected AT&T. It took forever, but after I manually selected T Mobile, it was possible to use my cell phone again. Very weird.

Which model is it? If it's not a device that can be used for VoLTE at Public Mobile, it's not going to work well (if it at all) for phone calls in the US. There are no 3G/HSPA networks remaining that Public Mobile customers can use in the US.
