Incorrect HST tax rate used on older invoices

gdskelly

The HST tax rate changed from 15% to 14% in Nova Scotia April 1, 2025.

When I view and print invoices that predate the HST rate change they show the new tax rate and not the rate that applied at the time of the payment.

How can I generate and print an invoice with the correct tax rate (15%) prior to April 1, 2025?

Yes, exactly. I have to submit the receipts. They state an incorrect HST amount. The difference is small for sure but all the HST stuff is looked at closely since we have a recent change in the rate. The downloaded invoice states the incorrect tax rate.

Since it appears PM is generating the document for older periods on-the-fly using the current rate there is no reprocessing of archived documents. Should be a simple fix...

Hi @cellphoneuser1

The payment was made for the correct amount. I am unable to produce an invoice from Public Mobile with the correct amount shown.

So they charged you the right amount but you receipt says the wrong amount?  As long as your service still works, ignore the problem with the receipt.  It could make Public overpay the tax but that's not on you.  Are you needing to get this fixed for business expense purposes?

Hi @cellphoneuser1

The payment was made for the correct amount. I am unable to produce an invoice from Public Mobile with the correct amount shown.

Hi @hTideGnow

If I understand correctly, the issue you linked is related to the selection of tax jurisdiction. My jurisdiction is correct. My issue is the invoice for an older billing period is generated using the current tax rate and not the rate that was applicable on the billing date.

You could make a copy of the receipt and send it to CRA with a note asking for the difference returned.  CRA should be able to mail a cheque but unless it's a a difference of a few dollars, it might not be worth it to mail a letter to the CRA asking for the difference.

hi @gdskelly

you might not need to contact PM support, this is the reason for the tax issue

https://productioncommunity.publicmobile.ca/t5/Get-Support/HST/m-p/1332131/highlight/true#M915451

Turns out that Public Mobile is following the CRA guidelines from 2006 (presumably never updated) regarding how to determine taxes for cellular service. The CRA document is here., the verbiage in question is the bottom of page 2.

Thank you @Chalupa_Batman for the direction to the support ticket. The problem is the invoice is not generated with the amount equal to the payment made. The source of the error appears to be related to the incorrect application of the HST rate on the downloaded invoice.
