Hi, I just got home from signing up and the location where I signed up (south common mississauga) did the following:
1- charged me a $30 + tax activation fee (I questioned this but the rep there told me this always applies)
2- rep told me my referral friend couldn't get a referral bonus
Meanwhile I check the website and verify neither of these are correct. Can you assist?

I just joined public mobile myself today, and also had a referral code that I was hoping the walmart rep would apply. (I saw on here they sometimes won’t apply it in store.) on the receipt he gave me in store it didn’t look like it was applied, but when I got home and made my online account, it did seem that that $10 off had been applied.

@Viola1980 As everyone has said there is no activation fee, only the $10 + tax charge for the SIM card. The referral credit is $10 only for the person being referred and $1/30 days for the person referring their friend/family while the referred person maintains an active line with Public Mobile (read details here , scroll down to 'The Refer A Friend Reward' section).
Regarding the $30 fee you talk about:
When you login into your self-serve account what plan are you on?
Since this is pre-paid, to activate a Public Mobile line/account, you would have had to pay for a 30/90 day plan. Perhaps that is what the $30 went towards?
There is a $30 plan (details here) that has unlimited calling/text and 500MB + 500MB bonus for AutoPay. Is this the plan you activated?
South Common Mississauga, was that at a Wal-Mart location?
Once the above details are clarified, we'll know whether there was an issue that the moderators need to look into. Good luck.

Used to be that's how it worked. I would think it still does. The store's gotta make some revenue and pay the rent. Some profit on phones, accessories and some commissions on activations and SIM's and then any other fees they think they can pull out of the customer.

@Viola1980 , I suggest you login to the self serve account and check the payment history to confirm what exactly you were charged $30 for. If it's not for the plan, then you should contact the moderator team for resolution. The moderator team can be reached via private message using this link. Please include a detailed description of the issue and the required resolution. This will speed up problem resolution significantly. Refer to the following knowledge base link for additional information on contacting the moderator team.
Do rate the store experience. In the store locator, you can rate the store. It's important to notify Public Mobile of any shady practices.

Hum...not right!!! I would go back to the store and speak with the representative or the boss...TODAY!!
2.As said above you will have the 10$ credit but your referral will have 1$ credit per month.

There is no activation fee for PM (outside of buying the SIM itself). Are you sure the $30 isn't the pre-pay for the a plan's fees? Ex. 1GB + Unlimited Canada Talk/Text plan? PM Is a prepay not post pay service so paying upfront for it is normal. If it is truly an activation fee, then it sounds like the store is up to something fishy.
As for friend not getting referral bonus, currently there isn't any special bonus (that promo isn't active right now) they should get the $1 off per 30 days deal though. That usually shows up a few days later.
