I need to call Ireland, this is ridiculous!!

I've been a PM member since July and not soon after signing up I discovered Ireland is not in your list of approved countries that we can long distance call.

You really want to get it added to your list the amount of Irish in Canada using Public Mobile!! Seriously guys!! I've had so many instances over the past few months that I've needed to call family, my bank, various companies I have an account with back home, and there is absolutely no way of calling them!! I'm thinking of leaving Public Mobile because I need to call Ireland?? So on behalf of all the Irish out there that cant call anyone in Ireland, sort your selves out Public Mobile!!

@DebS43

Use fongo. Free WiFi is everywhere in Ireland ts even on the public transit. Otherwise get a local SIM card. For the about €10 you will have plenty of coverage for a month.

Tesco offers 5000min, 5000 texts and 8gb of data and a free sim card for €10. Or you can review plans of the major players here....

@barrascuk

You and me both.....this is why members need to start their own thread. Well the OP will be happy to know pm has added Ireland to the list.

@Shuriken

I don't understand your problem?

Jeepers!!!

@barrascuk   OP is talking about roaming while he/she in Ireland..  Roaming while there instead of calling Ireland from Canada

Are you talking Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland?

Northern Ireland is covered here.

I put my vote on TextNow as well.  It is perfect if you want to call home or leave your "local" number for your friends to call you while you are in Ireland.  But keep in mind, you won't be able to use it to call Ireland number

Yes, no roaming could be trouble.  But roaming usually is costly.  If you  need data there as well, get a local prepaid SIM.  it is very common in Europe and very cheap.

Google Hangouts (or the replacement program Google Chat) does not allow you to do regular phone calls using your main phone number.  It does allow you to receive voice/video calls from other people who are using the same app and requires a working internet connection.

Download free voip app like TextNow for use whenever you have access to a wifi signal. You can phone/text whomever you want in Canada or US. There's other voip app's that work just as well, but I've only used TextNow while out of Canada and it seems to work fine.

You are totally right! Now that I think about it, I called from Japan to Canada, and from Germany to Canada. Which is free! But the other way is not free... I did call Japan (something about sumo tickets if I recall correctly) but can't remember how I did that. Probably an annoying international calling card!

Please check all these Betamax providers. They are very cheap and all of them they have local canadian access number. Goodluck!!

@nzyyc most Canadian and US numbers are free to call with Hangouts.  However, overseas do cost money.  Irelenad appears to be somewhere between 2c and 30c (USD), depending on what type of number you're calling:  https://www.google.com/voice/b/0/rates

@Shuriken or, pop out to your local convenience store or grocery store (etc) and have a look at the pre-paid long distance cards.  They have local access numbers you can call within your plan minutes (if you only have province-wide talk, make sure to get one that has an access number within your province).  I'm not sure how it would compare price-wise or quality-wise to using Fongo as @popping has suggested, but it's another option to consider.

Before I go searching 🙂 with province-wide, does that not let you call any toll-free number in the 1 country code area? (depending on whether the toll-free owner hasn't restricted geographic area of course)

Edit: Ok I searched. Most of those LD cards are a toll free entry number. Shouldn't be a problem to use them. They're a bit of work to use as you have to call the number, then enter the code, then dial the party you want. But the rates are great and convenient.

Hey there!  You're on a low cost, third tier cellular provider who offers great value but doesn't always have what everyone wants.

Perhaps another value carrier has what you're looking for?  I only use province-wide calling, so I'm not affected by this, but I do feel your pain.  Get your friends in your community together, and start lobbying Public Mobile with numerous posts and messages about this outrageous oversight!

In the meantime, how about finding other ways to call those you need to contact?  I've seen VoIP services with very inexpensive rates for international calling, and all you need is a data connection to the internet to use it.

Check out VoIP.ms for instance... I was going to use this for myself when I was going to try a data-only cellular package.

@Shuriken

It may be a long wait for PM to add Ireland long distance.

For now, install Fongo app on your phone to call Ireland at 2 cents per minute.

LTE latency is low.  VoIP voice quality is acceptable on LTE.  You don't need high download and upload speed for VoIP call.
