Apparently the A50 supports 4G, but, recently I was unable to make a crucial within-US call with the add-on (but was able to access the internet). After the crisis had passed and much googling, I deselected AT&T which for some reason the phone kept selecting by default and choose T-Mobile, the only network in the US that still supports 3G LTE. Only then was I able to Talk.
My questions are:
1. Was this a VoLTE not available issue on my A50 or Public Mobile or something else problem?
2. Bottom line: Will I need a newer phone to make calls once 3G is phased out in the next year?

1. A50 has VoLTE but it is not on PM's VoLTE whitelist. You can check your phone's VoLTE compatibility here:
https://www.publicmobile.ca/en/get-help/articles/volte
2. Yes, you will need a newer model of phone that is compatible with PM's VoLTE network. For example, an A55, A56, A15, A16 will work.

here's some reading and a devise checker at the bottom.
