I found a phone with active SIM. Locked of course so I cannot see who owner's friends are to let them know owner should call his/her phone and get in touch with me.
Does anybody has an idea how to get in touch with the owner to return phone?

Police stations absolutely will handle this type of thing. Not only is there a specific process for it, but they can use non-emergency level resources/staff to take care of it. At the very least, it provides the owner of the device a safe place to collect the property. The person who owns the phone does not know the person who found it and vice versa.

Event has been resolved. Here is the summary.
Thank you all for your suggestions and advices.
- Bringing phone to the police will accomplish nothing as cops have no time nor inclination to deal with such trivial stuff. Plus police station is far away from me...
- Finding a phone number from SIM was not a problem and as suggested to leave voice mail might work IF owner decides to access his mailbox. Not very likely, but idea is sound.
- Posting an 'ad' at soc. net. might work too and I did that in local soc.net but only thing I got is a bunch of 'likes'. Not everybody likes or uses soc.net.
- Chatting with 'real agent' of owner's provider resulted in advise to 'bring phone to the store'. Yeah, right. No comment...
- At the end owner called his number, I verified person is legitimate owner through phone description and few trick questions and we met at public place same evening when owner unlocked phone in front of me confirming ownership.
Funny thing was owner asked me am I at certain location which was about 10km from where I was thus confirming (in my mind) all those 'locate apps' and techniques are joke... Maybe they work for military/government/police but I would not trust them at all. Your experience might be different but keeping the phone secured (NOT in a pants' back pocket) is best way to avoid losing it.

I don't know of any phone that locks the "physical" sim card slot. All that is required is a sim pin. I have successfully returned 2 lost phones this way.....simply by calling the phone # listed and leaving a message with my contact info.

hi @Meow
out of all the suggestions, the only feasible one is to keep the phone on and hope the owner would call the phone or can locate the phone (answering phone calls does not need to unlock phone)
and yes police station is a way, but police won't actively trace down the ownsr., and most of us would not go to police station to file a list report

I don't suggest any of this. My recommendation would be turn the phone into the local police station.

Checking the phone info via SIM on another phone is the best option, also putting an ad in the area it was found on Facebook marketplace and message boards

no one talk about "negotiate phone return." , "arrange" maybe.
you might better to just suggest to sell it
can't believe

ME? I did not fount that phone...
Maybe it is a wrong choice of words but under 'negotiation' I assume time, date and place to meet to return phone.
If you know netter word to describe such event, please say it. Always willing to learn 🙂

that would not work. All phones have have to enter PIN or fingerprint to unlock

I would wait until phone's owner realizes he/she can call his number and see who is on the other side - crook or honest person and then negotiate phone return.

Check the sim card slot for a physical sim card. If there is one put it in your phone to retrieve the owner's phone # under "Settings>>About Phone".

wait for someone to locate you , they might be able to use Find My Phone to find you
