Canada-US-Mexico

Hi, we are with Fizz(Videotron) right now and I would like to switch to Public Mobile.

We are going to the US for 2 weeks and would like to know what SIM card we need to buy and if we can use our phone without roaming frees?

I was planning on taking the plan 29$ a month Canada-US-Mexico (we will not be making a lot of calls, if we do) and when I come back switch to Canada plan only.

Thank you!

Hi, Since we go to the US maybe twice a year, this seems like a good option. If we ever go more often, we'll upgrade since it's difficult to downgrade. This is a big help, thanks everyone!!!

Agree. The OP says they intend to switch to Canada only plan after their trip. Plus the current $29 10GB plan is not such a great deal, knowing that PM can offer double the data 20GB at the same price at certain times.

Depends on how often one travels to US/Mx. If they go to US frequently, then I'd agree. If travel to US is limited to once a year for a coupla weeks then 15 Day US Roaming add-ons are good options. The currently offered $19 plan with Canada wide calling, international text and some data is a decent plan if just staying in Canada mostly. Then get US talk / text ($15) add-on for a 2 week trip.

Hairbag and Dunkman are correct. If you sign up for that $29 plan, you may have a difficult time trying to downgrade to a cheaper plan afterwards.

I believe that Fizz has international roaming and roaming data is a reasonable $4 per gigabyte. Perhaps you could wait until after your trip and then switch to the public mobile plan afterwards. Just remember that if you subscribe for a cheap plan, you can always upgrade to a better plan later. In fact, currently there are some plans available for subscribers ($20 3GB, $23 6 GB, $27 20 GB) which are superior to the new activation plans. So, if you subscribe to the $19 plan first, these better plans should be available for you to change on renewal later. Good luck.

once you do select a plan, you might have difficulty downgrading to a cheaper Canada only plan.  Right now there's a Canada only plan but it's $34. When you return and want a Canada only plan, log in to your account to see what's available to you. Plans change frequently here. You might be better off just selecting a cheap Canada only plan now, but buy a 15 Day US Roaming add-on for use in USA.

@Gloiredumatin   If  you are travelling any time soon you might want to pick up a Public Mobile sim from a Telus/Koodo or Mobile Klinik store or order from Amazon since ordering direct from Public Mobile can be slow.  That's assuming physical sim card because esim would be immediate.

My phone is good. I will look into it.

Which model phone are you using?  Ideally, it should be VoLTE compatible with Public mobile.  If not, you may have talk issues while roaming in USA because the 3G network is decommissioned in the States.

Here is some additional information:

Finally, with Public mobile, it is more difficult to downgrade plans.  Existing customers are offered personalized plan options (which are usually more expensive than the present plan).  You might be stuck with the $29 plan afterwards, which is  a decent plan to begin with.

yes, you need to buy a Public Mobile sim card to use the service here.  then use the app to subscribe

and you are right, if you join canada-us-mex plan, you can use your service (data/voice/text) for free in US and mexico, no extra roaming charge
