ever heard of WhatsApp ? If you download the free WhatsApp, you'll be able to call family / friends who also have WhatsApp..uses local wifi or your separately purchased data. Convince your family / friends at home to get the app and you can stay in contact with 'em while you're in Japan...for free.

@Fokion No, you can't. Check out https://esimdb.com/ to find some eSIM options. You can transfer your calls to a fongo or another similar voip app before leaving.

sorry @Fokion , no, PM does not have roaming service in Japan.  But you can buy travel eSIM instead. One popular one is Airalo

Public Mobile has no service options in Japan or anywhere else outside of Canada / US / Mexico. You need a local sim to get service in Japan..try Japan Wireless or Sakura Mobile. Depends on your cellphone if you can use esim or hard sim.
