Bar/not Android but just button type of telephones working with Public Mobile

Hi there,

I don't use either text messages or data.

Thus I wanted to buy a bar type phone (Not Android, but just with buttons).

What are the telephones types/brands I can buy to use with Public Mobile?

I think I'll try ZTE F160. Will it work with Public Mobile?

Networks: UMTS 900/1800/2100 MHz; GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/1900 MHz; HSDPA, 3GPP Rel5, DL 3.6Mbps/UL 384kbps.

@nadezhda

Assuming that these are the frequencies supported by the phone you are getting, it will not work with Public Mobile / the Telus network UMTS bands - 850/1900 is required. The Telus network also isn't compatible with the GSM/GPRS/EDGE protocol. The HSDPA protocol is for data services.

Where did you find this offer? With the specs above I'm sorry to say it's NOT compatible with 3G talk and text services offered by Public Mobile.

It possibly works on the Rogers 2G GSM 850/1900 network for the next little while.

 ZTE F160

FYI, It's not on willmyphonework, just so others don't lose time looking up...

I hated the Razr phones.  The software interface drove me nuts.  On the CDMA v3c devices, the softkeys were programmed just "backwards" in my opinion.  "No" was on the left side above the call key and "yes" was always on the right side above the hang up button.  That just makes no logical sense because an affirmative button got placed above a negative/end button.  To make matters worse, the "clear" function also used the right soft button. That itself was fine becasue that part actually made sense, but because that same physical button was also use for "send" and "yes", that led to countless accidently deleted text messages after I had typed them. That type of inconsistent software programming just ruins the user experience of a product.

I also remember the Razr used to get really hot.

Hi, now adays the flip phone market has gone down quite substantially, but there are a few that are still available.

Happy hunting!

The first 2 that you listed aren't compatible with Public Mobile. There are many bar phones with physical buttons, but most of the ones that I've seen that are currently available aren't compatible with this service.

The last one (the prepaid Telus Alcatel model) is compatible with Public.

There is a bigger selection here. You should be able to find something that meets your need:

Just to reiterate @computergeek541's point: Be aware that unless they have 3G (UMTS/WCDMA 850/1900) capability they will not work with Public Mobile for talk (and text).

(A fair amount of the phones in @MEU_21's and @passiveegg's links are 2G GSM phones that work on the Rogers network only.)

@nadezhda Nokia has a new 3310 3g phone coming out. Not sure if in Canada but might be worth looking into.

It's nice to hear that someone out there only needs their phone for talking. In fact, most people rarely use it for making phone calls. Nowadays it's all about texting and data. 🙂

The selection of flip phones is really thin.  One option is to shop the prepaid phones from Koodo.  Network compatibility is assured and no need to worry about unlocking.  There's only one flip phone available at the moment.

I don't know these phones, but check this website to know if they are compatible with Public Mobile:

Here is a phone Nokia got out recently: https://www.nokia.com/en_int/phones/nokia-3310-3g

Cell phones with physical dialing buttons have become increasingly uncommon, but they do still exist.  You won't have much choice, and any carrier is probably going to over one such type of phone at a time in the current lineup.

In the past few years, Duro and Huawei have  had some bar phone type models.  If it doesn't come from Telus, you'll need to make sure that you get it unlocked.  Just make sure that it has 850/1900MHz 3g.  You'll probably have an easier time finding a suitable phone if you're also okay with a flip design phone.
