I strongly suggest cancelling the order of this phone. Public Mobile does not have a good track record of supporting VoLTE on devices that aren't from major manufactuers and that weren't intended for primary sale to end users in Canada.

Band compatibility for European phone

Heya!

I preordered a Linux phone from Europe and it is understandably not listed on the available compatibility page. I have used the Chatbot to try and find out if the bands it uses are compatible with Public Mobile but the Chatbot is not sure either. The phone I am hoping to use says it has compatibility with:

LTE FDD: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 17, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 28AB, 66

LTE TDD: 34, 38, 39, 40, 41 •

5G NR: n1, n2, n3, n5, n7, n8, n12, n20, n26, n28, n38, n40, n41, n66, n77, n78

The chatbot said "Public Mobile’s network compatibility information is listed by frequency (MHz), not by 5G NR band numbers (n1, n78, etc.). Here’s what we can confirm:

Supported Frequency Bands:

700 MHz – corresponds to bands in the n28/n12 range (LTE/5G)

850 MHz – corresponds to n5 (currently being refarmed for 4G/5G)

1900 MHz – corresponds to n2/n25

2100 MHz – corresponds to n1/n66

1700 MHz AWS (uplink) – corresponds to n66

Important Notes:

Public Mobile does not publish a specific list of 5G NR band numbers (e.g., n77, n78, n41).

For the most accurate device compatibility check, visit: https://www.publicmobile.ca/en/get-help/articles/check-your-phones-compatibility

You can also check the Public Mobile Community for more technical details shared by other subscribers."

It appears the "corresponds to n1/n66" will mean it will work but I am not sure. Does anyone here know anything more than this?

This photo is a response from a few months ago when I emailed the company making the phone to see if it would work in Canada without being on roaming 24/7.

Thanks for your time!

You'll need to have a cell that is recognized by Public Mobile to be VoLTE compliant...not all VoLTE equipped cells are usable with PM. Here's some reading on the subject with a device checker a the end of the article.

https://www.publicmobile.ca/en/get-help/articles/volte

In short...I'd suggest sticking with a North American version of a main stream maker....ie Samsung, Apple etc.

Thanks for the link. I am really trying to get away from the Big Tech stuff. I suppose I will have to get another Pixel phone and install GrapheneOS.
