I'm currently on lowest plan and want to get us can mex plan for my upcoming trip, once done can I go back to my old plan?

Nope

It’s very difficult to downgrade one’s plan — though I managed to drop from a $39 to $27 one

I thinks it's pretty much impossible to go to a lower plan. Suggest getting a local SIM card.

You can use Fongo to make free calls *to* Canada from overseas.

No, it's not impossible. You can get lower plans if it's in your account.
