SIM card while traveling abroad

I'm going to Japan for two weeks and getting a local SIM card. This is my first time using a SIM card.

My phone is a Galaxy S21 FE (not compatible with eSIM)

Q1. Will my phone work right after just switching the SIM card?

Q2. If my phone needs to change any settings, please tell me how.

Q3. When I come back to Canada and put the original SIM back in, do I need to change any settings?

hi @makko1

1. technically yes. But confirm with the Japanese network carrier that your phone is compatible. You might need to give them the actual model number, not just S21FE

2. If any setting change, it will be a question to that local sim carrier. But generally, make sure the Public Mobiel sim card is removed, and you can Reset network settings after you insert the new local sim

3. Make sure you only Public Mobile sim card is in the phone. Check VPN settings page, some local sims use VPN , you need to delete those VPN settings. Again, you can then Reset Network Settings when you are back

my son returned from a trip to Osaka..he removed is PM sim and installed Japanese sim without changing anything. Same when he got home. (Not sure what make of cell he has)

added...make use of WhatsApp to stay in contact with family in Canada. It's free to talk / text with any others who have WhatsApp....for free using wifi or local data.

I don't know what carrier or phone he used, so I can't be sure it will work the same way, but it's good to know it doesn't seem too difficult.
