What happens to text messages while plan is expired?

Curious to know what happens to text messages that are not received while plan is expired. Do they stay in a cue to be received once plan is renewed or are they simply deleted and lost forever? Does the sender get any error message, or do they appear to be delivered?

End of last month my buddy forgot to change his credit card information and when his subscription expired he didn't receive any text and phone would ring but hang up after if he tried to pick up.... After updating CC info he didn't get any of the texts I sent him... The only text he could receive was from PM...

SMS text messages will send to you and appear to be delivered on their end but do not get saved or queued awaiting reactivation. However if both you and your contact have RCS (chat) messaging enabled you should continue to be able to send and recieve these messages while connected to wifi. Eversafe 2FA codes can still be received regardless and you may also recieve other online account 2FA codes if connected to wifi (YMMV).

This applies to Android phones. I can't speak on iPhones other than iMessage works on wifi of course.
