This doesn't happen all the time, it's very sporadic.

Phone is a newer Samsung A14.

Are you or your sender of your texts using RCS message with your Android phone?

Like iMessage, RCS messages (android) require data to send and receive.

I sent a text out with wifi off. Reply did not come back until wifi was on, then came in as RCS.

Data has nothing to do with SMS. But to handle MMS data has to be on even though it will not use data allowance.

It could be your service or phone. Use only native texting app, not 3rd party apps. I have NEVER had issues with SMS.

You need to talk to the sender of the RCS texts. Need to send as regular SMS text.

Also check your settings to disable RCS messaging.

Which plan are you on? $15 plan with 250 Mb data? Easier to keep data on.
