You have to confirm first if your old number is portable to PM:

https://secure.koodomobile.com/checktransfereligibilityparrot/default.do?lang=en&appname=otherportal

I took out my old sim card and replaced it with the public mobile sim card I received.

I thought everything was well and my phone number would be ported from my previous provider to public, but I

recently got a message from public that my number couldn't be transferred, and they assigned a new phone number to my phone. What should I do now? I still have my old sim card and tried switching back, but that doesn't seem to solve anything..

If so call the porting team and ask them to re trigger the port request for you leaving that sim in phone to reply YES to the confirmation text to port
