My understanding is that band 4 is the most widely used LTE band in Canada - and the one some lower cost models, geared towards the European and Asian market, lack.

The specs provided by @zhoubill show bands 4, 5 and 7, so I personally think while that this phone is not covering all Telus bands, it should be fine for the major LTE bands, even if it's not covering the 700MHz range (bands 12/13/17/29/30).

Specs at the official site include Band 4. Along with a footnote:

"*Bands vary by region. Please check band availability for your specific device."

Specs at this site don't include Band 4.

Wikipedia shows 43 regional variants of this device.

Some have "stock" Android Nougat, some have "stock" Android Oreo, some have Android One, some have Mi 5X MIUI.

Most variants are configured for different network protocols, as necessary for their specific regions.

Firmware updates (available now or in the future) might be available to reconfigure the device operating system and network support, although some of the review sites note that "upgraded" versions tend to suck the battery life very quickly, possibly a bug that Mi can fix or possibly unfixable.

Band 4 is not critical, but you won't get fastest LTE speeds without it. The device is 5G ready, which is a bit of future-proofing that'll make 4G partially redundant anyhow (circa mid-2019 onwards, lol).

The phone vendor should be able to provide details about the exact model number of the particular device being sold, along with its supported network protocols.

This phone looks to be quite compatible to me. For Asian brands that are not really featured in North America, I find frequency check to be a better resource than will my phone work.

My guess is will only be 4G; Had a Huawei P8 Max before and no LTE just 4G.

First hand experience - bought this phone and switched to PM a couple of days ago. So far so good - enjoy both a great phone and PM service (had some issues with porting my number from Speakout, but moderators were very helpful)

Have been using MI A1 for a few month now, I'm around the Barrie Ontario area mostly. Usually receiving 3G service, get 4G occasionally.
