So, while 5G is the future of wireless, LTE is still an essential part of that future. LTE and 5G will work together in many cases to provide the best possible experience. For example, use 5G to download data at high speeds.

If you've bought a new 5G smartphone, particularly one of the latest iPhone models, you might've noticed that it sometimes switches between 4G and 5G automatically. That's because iOS 16, by default, shifts between the networks based on different factors, such as your phone's needs and battery life

@gb23 I think we will be using VoLTE . But, with the current PM's VoLTE list, many with older phones will still be using 3G

Did a quick search on Google, there are Vo5G, this is a post from last year:

There's 3 stages of voice with 5G:
5G NSA is regular VoLTE
5G SA will initially use EPSFB to switch to LTE for VoLTE
5G SA will eventually use native VoNR when SA coverage is good

We are at stage 1 right now, but Rogers also has stage 2 on their newly launched SA network. Bell and Telus only have stage 1 since there's no SA on their networks.

Don't know when stage 3 will come. It could later this year for Rogers, but my suspicion is next year.

Maybe @sheytoon can advise us further on this topic?

I'm not currently on a 5G plan. It was my understanding that you will still connect to the 5G network regardless of having a 3G, 4G LTE or 5G plan. Your speeds will just be throttled differently based on the plan tier. The only requirements being that your device must support 5G on PM and have it turned on.

Calls will use VoLTE (4G) and 3G for a while. VoNR (5G calling) is still rather a new thing and just starting to get deployed worldwide.

Exactly right. I think you found my old comments.

All 5G NSA calling will be on VoLTE (or 3G if there's problems with VoLTE).

VoNR and EPSFB are only applicable to 5G SA, which is not launched yet by Telus.

VoNR is active on Telus. However VoLTE is not. Some phones are bypassing VoLTE & straight forward connected to VoNR.
