They've done that for a while now I believe. If I recall correctly only Bell and Rogers owned carriers offer unthrottled video. Telus and their carriers Koodo and Public Mobile slow it down.

Why is PM throttling YouTube now? I'm getting 7.5 Mbps from youtube when I have a 5G plan. On VPN I get over 100. What the heck is going on? You need to stop this as it's not right. I'm paying for my data and I'm not allowed to use it however I want?

edited by computergeek541: inappropriate language removed

@Dandu31 : May I know how you measure this? If you are looking at the YouTube video "Stats for Nerd" view it will show the Kbps connection speed depending on the quality you choose. For example suppose you choose 1080p50 HD which is the highest quality available for the given video then the connection speed that is shown will be different than if you choose 480p for example. For 480 you don't need such a higher connection speed so that's what YouTube will show. You can read about this at, https://www.androidauthority.com/how-much-data-does-youtube-use-964560/

For the VPN if you are measuring the speed using something like https://www.speedtest.net/ that gives the actual speed of your connection. Similar thing goes for things like Netflix. Whatever high internet connection you have doesn't matter as if you look at https://help.netflix.com/en/node/306 you'll see that if you have say a connection speed of 20Mbps you can watch UHD in 4K resolution. So a person having 100 Mbps and the person having the 20 Mbps gets the same max quality since the streaming provider just doesn't send you higher and higher quality videos depending on the speed of the connection you have. 🙂

I'm measuring it with the stats for nerds yeah. Speedtests are good, but I'm unable to watch 4K as it's always buffering. Turning on the VPN gets around 130 Mbps connection speed.

 this is with no VPN

 this is with VPN.

The results clearly show Public Mobile throttling YouTube for some reason

Very intriguing indeed. But maybe this is a larger issue with Telus itself as other's have noticed this on Telus; https://www.reddit.com/r/telus/comments/qjkp9d/anyone_experiencing_throttled_or_slow_data_in/ 🤔
