For the purposes of testing if your phone is properly set up for SMS, you can send a text message to yourself (to and from thje same phone number). This won't help with troubleshoot any intercarrier text messages, but that isn't related to the set up of the device.

You can use free voip app as TextNow and send SMS to yourself (to different phone numbers).
