Local calls to a non-local numbee

Hello,

My friend has a phone number from a different province but lives in my local area. For some reason when I try to call her I'm given a message saying I don't have a long distance plan. From my understanding, provided the recipient is in the same area it's still a local call. Is that incorrect

If the recipient's number is BASED in the same area that you are currently in, then it's a local call for you. It has nothing to do with where the recipient physically is at that moment.

Therefore, since your friend's number is based outside the area where you currently are, it's long distance for you. However, if she calls you, it should NOT be long distance for her, because your number would be based in the area where she physically is.

You need to buy long distance add on or use an app like fongo/hangout dialer.

@Bregreb67 as a free workaround, you can download a free calling/texting app called fongo and from fongo get a number with the same area code as your friend.

This way you can call your friend free of charge where wifi and data available.

Receiving a call is always free on your regular number.

There is some anecdotal evidence that incoming calls connect even when outside one's province.

Install Hangouts dialer and make free data calls. The recipient will see them as coming from the phone number on the SIM card. Pair this with free incoming calls anywhere in Canada, it's the next best thing to buying long distance minutes.

Really? I had no idea it would show my number from hangouts. I'm assuming it will only do that if I call from data as opposed to WiFi, yes?

You can call from data/wifi as long as internet access but you have to verify your number first in your account setting in the app.

Sorry, this is incorrect. This call will be treated as a call to another province. It doesn't matter where she is.
