Unlimited talk and text to US and Canada. The data speed will be the same as it would be in Canada. It starts when you buy it. Leave the networks on automatic as it will connect to T-Mobile. Leave the modes on LTE etc. If your phone has not yet been enabled for volte then your phone needs to be able to switch down to 2G GSM for talk. Or you'll need to manually switch it.

Adding - and you'll have nothing in Alaska. Coverage is dependent on T-Mobile internal coverage. So you may find areas without coverage. Same as any provider.

If so, there's some hints to minimize your aggravation. If you buy the talk/text and data package and you run outta data before the 15 days...don't re-buy the whole new talk/text/data add-on...instead just buy the data portion of the add-on.
