Hi there, I am looking to get a $30 plan as a new customer with Public Mobile and switch from Fido. I have two questions:

1. I don't have a credit card. Can I get a plan on debit card?

2. I need to get a sim card first, do I need to wait for the physical sim card to arrive by mail before getting a plan?

Consider taking a TEMP number if you plan to port in. Once your happy with the service, then initiate the port process.

1. yes, you can use Visa debit. Some MC debit should work too

2 Yes, you need to wait for the sim card as you need to enter the sim card number for activateion

Don't order sim card from PM online as Delivery could take anywhere from 5 days to 3 weeks

Instead,

get a Public Mobile sim card from

local Telus or Koodo store (call and confirm availability before you go)

1. Only VISA/MC Debit will work if you do not have 'real' credit card.

Other option is to contact agent so they can open account for you, suspend it, and then you will purchase voucher and pay with voucher.

2. You have to get SIM and through activation open an account.

if any problem with your debit, you can also consider getting Visa GC from stores and use it for activation

You can get a SIM online from Canadian Cell Supplies for $5. They were out of stock last couple of weeks but have them back in stock with fast shipping.

You can also arrange for pickup if you are in the Oakville/Mississauga area.

You can use Visa debit for purchasing online if you have that, and you can actually also purchase top up vouchers which you buy in person and then apply to your account online if that’s a convenient option for you. 🙂 There’s also some physical places where you can just tell them your phone number and they’ll be able to directly apply money to your account (this is called instant top up).

Here’s a link to places that you can find vouchers/instant top ups, and here’s some more information on paying for your service in retail - you just have to inquire at the cash register!
