Whatever is shown during an active phone call will be your phone's 3G. After hanging up the call you will switch back to LTE, and presumably your icon will change back to 4G.

I just set up a new phone with PM today and was only originally getting 3g. I followed instructions I found here to set up the APN and I am now getting 4g but no LTE. Im living downtown Toronto so surely I should be getting LTE. The phone I am using is an ASUS Zenphone 4 ZE554KL which says is compatible with TELUS. I checked compatibility with the IMEI checker on the Public Mobile site and it says it should be compatible. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Adding further to the confusion, some phones shows "4g"
for what other phones label as "3g". There was time time when "4g" was stated more and more to mean the HSPA type networks. Even on coverage maps and carrier websites, some would list CDMA EVDO as 3g, UMTS-based networks as 4g, and LTE as 4g LTE.

This was extremely confusing because up until that point, the carriers were not even allowed to call UMTS-type connections as 4g. Customers continued, in the most part (at least in my opinion) to refer to HSPA+ as 3g and I found that even customer service at carrier still refered to as 3g as well much of the time. To this day, many carriers still say that the HSPA networks are 4g on their websites, contrary what I consider to be the most common usage of that term.

Some phones label 4g as meaning LTE, and as mentioned, that includes the popular Asus Zenfone line of devices. It all depends on the software installed on the specific device. Installing a custom rom, or sometimes even a software update, can change how 3g/H/H+/4g/LTE is displayed on the phone's screen. 4g can mean different things.
