The phone comaptibility checker provided by Public Mobile, to my knowledge, hasn't been working properly for the longest time. However, please be aware that no such checker or list will ever be complete. Which phone are you wondering about?

iPhone 4 or iPhone 4s would work at Public Mobile but it would need to either unlocked or from Telus or Koodo. The only iPhone that would not work at Public Mobile assume the conditions just mentioned are met would be the original 2g-only iPhone.

FYI:

iPhone 3/4 APN settings cannot be updated manually. You will need to connect to wifi, access http://www.unlockit.co.nz/mobilesettings/ with Safari, then follow the directions there.
