yes it's for free. you can change your phone number up to 4 times every 30 days after you’ve activated.

use browser from computer,and clear cache and cookies and use one page inPrivate mode,

or safari on private mode, To change go to your Self Serve Account Login Page and:

Select the “Plans and Add ons” tab
Click on “Change Phone Number”
Then, you can choose to select a new phone number

You can change your number up to four times for 30 days free of charge. If you decide to change your number make sure you have access to all of your accounts that may have it listed as your 2FA and you will have to update all of those accounts that use your old number with your new number.

If you originally ported in your phone number and it is from a non-telus company once you change numbers it will be released back to the original provider and you will not be able to recover it unless you activate with that provider.
